The ante is the first bet that a player makes, which is typically the minimum amount required to play. Ante is often a nickel, and is a contribution to the pot. The ante is determined by the stakes of the game. Depending on the poker version, a player may be required to ante up before the deal.
During the first betting interval, all players are dealt one card. After the card is dealt, the dealer has the last right to shuffle. Cards are dealt to the left.
The betting intervals are separated by two rounds of dealing. In each round, the players receive a new card. Each player may have the right to shuffle, but a shuffle is not mandatory. For example, if a player has the second highest-ranking poker combination, he or she may be allowed to shuffle.
